OCS - Chance

Unlike MSC, in the original Monopoly game Chance cards were not the primary element of chance. The roll of the dice and subsequent move provided most of the game flow and was entirely chance based. Each move could spell disaster for one player and riches for another.

Recreating this in a global game with many players (who are not online at the same time) is difficult. Perhaps this is why MSC made such a half-hearted attempt. Since some players will become much more powerful than others, and new players will join the game already in progress, a direct analogue to the original dice system seems impossible.

I don't have any good ideas here. The thought of "visiting" another players property is interesting. Certainly the current MCS system of chance is horrible. Perhaps searching for or purchasing streets could require a "visit" to neighboring properties somehow. Maybe someone else has an idea?

  1. Um...

the idea of a token/avatar that represents the player is an interesting one. If a player was required to move their avatar to a location in order to purchase a property there then that could be a good way of implementing a (id hesitate to call it rent) charge that goes to the owner of the property....

If you wanted to be more realistic you could make it so that they can only purchase the property that they landed on. Each day the players account could be assigned a number of moves, with players able to store at most a day and a halfs moves. (i dont think one move per day would work unless you allowed players to buy any property within the local area, and 1 move would also mean very little action on the first few days)

Chance cards could be introduced into that as well....with players possibly drawing a chance instead of landing on an actual property. In fact if you used that as the way of giving out chance cards instead of during the build process it would be a lot fairer...people would be required to try their luck and move their token to an area to see if they draw a chance card.

I would want to have personalised avatars, just a little image on screen of a token (perhapes let the player pick from the classic monoploy tokens, or use a simple cone with ball on top, to provide some very basic customisation.....its actually surprising the level of personal identita and association people have with the specific monopoly playing pieces....ive seen masive arguments start over who gets to play the battle ship, even though the token actually has no affect on the game at all, it would be nice to be able to introduce that in some way)
