Seeking Developers

If you're interested in this project and have some time to share, we are looking for talented folks, specifically with skills in PHP, MySQL and AJAX (update: this was just a first guess at technologies to be used, by no means final :). You can contact me at opencitystreets@gmail.com or simply reply to this post. And if you have other abilities you'd like to contribute, please don't be shy :) Depending on how far we get with this, we'll be needing all kinds of help.

  1. I'd recommend you to use Java Servlets in favor of PHP and UDB instead of MySQL - just for performance reasons. Also, those languages are far less prone to errors, have better canalized data types, prepared statements and everything you need to secure the game...

Nevertheless I know all the languages quoted pretty well :-)

  2. Perhaps build on top of Google's App engine and Google will take care of data redundancy, backup etc so we won't run into the database corruption fiasco that Hasbro ran into.

  3. There are many design decision to be made here. I am trying to help organize this but I am not the best one to be making that type of choice. although have been a developer for over 15 years, my programming experience is mostly not web based :(

I will be making a new post shortly. We've had several responses to the call for devs and I'm sure more are going to come in.

  4. I've just sent an email to all who responded via email, encouraging them to introduce themselves in this thread. Let's hope everyone can meet each other and say hello, then perhaps lets think about setting up a better place for the developers to communicate. Google code or Sourceforge are all I have worked with, but the floor is open for suggestions.

  5. Hi Aaron,

great idea! There's been some discussion here too:

How would this game be done properly?

If you would like a sub-forum for the subject setup, let me know. The monopo.ly domain could be repurposed after the game finishes. I would be interested in contributing to an open source effort. My skills are in Python, Django, SQL, C# and iPhone.

    Cheers,
    Donovan.

  6. Great to hear from you Donovan.

I think we should try to combine things if possible to keep everyone together. Thanks for the offer of a forum. If everyone thinks that is a good idea then we can move things there. I also think we'll be setting up a sourceforge project or something similar soon. At that point maybe we can both point interested folks there. Whatever works best for everyone is fine by me :)

  7. Hi Aaron,

I'd recommend github.com as a source code repository.

http://open.monopo.ly as a possible home for any staging of the source code?

  8. Donovan,

I will check out github. We have to avoid using the name "monopoly" since I'm sure they'd love to go after us if we used their trademark. I have opencitystreets.com, I could point it at your server if you want to host a forum there?

  9. Hi everyone,

Sorry to say that I do not have programming skills, but I offer my game designing skills. I have experience in designing games that adheres to its objectives and player experiences. I believe in the concept of depth, which the current MCS lacks horribly.

It would be lovely to discuss these designs in a forum. Hope it would be up soon.

    Jay

  10. Hi Jay,

Welcome, it sounds like you have skills that the project could use. Hope to have a forum soon, there are a couple possibilities and I'm waiting to see what turns out. But something will come together quickly I'm sure :)

If you'd like an email when the forum is available, send me a note at opencitystreets@gmail.com. Or just check back here, there will be an announcement.

Thanks for writing and hope to work with you soon.

  11. I mainly create web applications using PHP, MySQL and Ajax, and don't have much experience using Java. However there are many parts of the game which won't use Java, for example, a house made forum system (Rather than using pre-existing forums such as phpBB) Which would make the whole game experience much better if everything was customised. I also have experience with setting up servers, mainly Ubuntu and Windows based servers, using Apache.

I do hope this project goes ahead, and a Monopoly City Streets style game is created, and this time done better.

  12. Hi,

I'd be interested in helping out. I am primarily a frontend developer, so my skills are in xhtml/css and JavaScript (preferably jQuery but I also have Mootools experience). I have experience working with AJAX/JSON stuff, as well as some work with the Google Maps API.

I also do a fair bit of PHP/MySQL work as well as XSLT, but as I said, my main focus is frontend so I would be happy to help regardless of the backend platform chosen.

Look forward to getting started :-)

    Cheers

    Andy

  13. Hello,
Instead of basing the project on Apache Webserver, it might be a good idea to use OKWS. (http://okws.org/doku.php?id=okws) That allows you to program the mainframe in c++, which means that the actual calculations etc are significantly faster than with PHP on an apache or Java serverlets on a java-based system.

If you need someone with a lot of freelance [PHP||MYSQL||XHTML||CSS||C||C++||some Java||some PASCAL] know-how, let me know. I don't have much free time, but would be interested in helping out here.

    Good luck, and have fun!

  14. Hello all,

I have skills in PHP, MySQL and AJAX on the web side. Also, I have proper knowledge of C, Java and C++.

I've not had experience with servers (thus networks) but I have my own website running.

I'm glad there are others who are interested in this. I think it would be better if there was somewhere exclusive to developers where we can gather and exchange ideas. It would be much tidier than here. Google Groups or any other web platform would help us alot.

    Cheers...

  15. We've set up a private mailing list for developers in addition to the public forums. I've sent out invitations to those who I've been communicating with via email, but there are some qualified folks posting here who I haven't corresponded directly with and so could not invite. If I've missed you, please send a note to opencitystreets@gmail.com if you'd like an invitation.

  16. hello,

I'm interested as well in helping out with this project.
My main skills are in graphic design (interface, buildings, animations, and whatever else you could be thinking of ;) ), I have a little knowledge as well of Java, flash A/S, and PHP. I have also been involved in some (sadly failed) open source MMOs before. I have some free time to give to this project, so I would be glad to help!
    Best,

    Shihan
